Phthalic Anhydride

Phthalic anhydride (C8H4O3) is an aromatic organic compound in the form of white, needle-like crystals at room temperature.

Industrially, it is produced by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of ortho-xylene or naphthalene with air using a vanadium pentoxide catalyst.

•The main input for plasticizers that convert rigid PVC plastics into flexible, bendable cables and synthetic leather coatings.

•Imparts fast drying and high gloss to alkyd resins used in architectural paints.

✓In PVC formulations for cable sheathing, synthetic leather, floor coverings (linoleum), and medical tubing.

✓In synthesizing unsaturated polyester resins and various paint pigments (e.g., phthalocyanine blue).
